Anh
AnhDr. Anh Nguyen Reiss is a 43 year old mother, a doctor, and a Vietnamese immigrant who was diagnosed with Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS) in February 2009.
Anh's only cure is a stem cell transplant. MDS is a disease of the bone marrow stem cell very similar to acute leukemia. It causes the bone marrow to produce ineffective red and white blood cells and platelets. Approximately 1/3 of patients with MDS progress to acute myeloid leukemia (AML) within months to a few years. But MDS patients also face other life-threatening dangers, such as a weak immune system and internal bleeding and hemorrhaging. Anh has been undergoing chemotherapy and regular blood transfusions to stabilize her red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets levels , but she is in a race to find a matching Asian or Vietnamese stem cell donor.

Hannah

"Life is suffering. Emotional, physical, mental, and spiritual pain, are ingrained so deeply within me ever since Aplastic Anemia has gripped my life... Due to the many transfusions, I now have high iron levels that range around 12,000 when the normal range is 40-120... My whole family hurts. But we do this together and so the pain is minimized because it is shared. We have learned so much and our love is deep and still. Love, extreme love, is what motivates us to go on, growing stronger every second, and with every breath. I always tell my family that I am ‘Sadly Happy.’ That my kind of ‘happiness’ is unique in that I cry as I smile, because I feel so much love and yet at the same time I am shaken with fear that one day my loved ones will be stolen and unjustly taken away...I need a miracle. I want to live. A life is waiting for me to be taken firmly and lived out to its fullest. I want a child, a family, and a good man to share this all with. I want normal..." You can help give Hannah and other patients like her a chance to live a normal life by registering to be a marrow donor.

Janet

On August 24, 2009, Janet Liang was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (bi-phenotypic) while finishing her bachelor's degree as an International Development Studies major and Education minor. A loving and dedicated friend to many who knew her at UCLA, she was a healthy, hardworking, and extremely passionate student who fell victim to this blood cancer at only 22-years old. Rushed to the UCLA Ronald Reagan Medical Center immediately after her diagnosis, she has just recently completed the inductio n phase of her chemotherapy treatment, which is often the most difficult for patients to endure. Now she is faced with the daunting task of searching for an unrelated bone marrow donor after doctors revealed that her younger brother and only sibling is not her match.

Janet wants to be able to fulfill her dreams of becoming a full-time teacher. She is deeply committed to addressing social justice issues in multicultural education and bridging the educational achievement gap transparent in today's schools. However, she is hilarious at unexpected moments: this girl is not serious as she seems and relishes in the small joys of life with her contagious laughter. A natural humanitarian at heart who aspires to also work in relief efforts in the developing world, she constantly worries and looks after others before thinking about herself. But now, she is in dire need of YOUR help to save her life and other patients as well.

Jerome

Jerome A message from Jerome…My name is Jerome Williams and I was diagnosed with Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML) in 2003 and if I don’t have a marrow transplant soon I will die. I’m African American, French and Native American which makes my search for a marrow donor all the more difficult since matching is based on one’s genetic makeup. To our detriment, people of color are grossly underrepresented in the national marrow donor registry. What this means is if you or someone you love is in need of a marrow transplant the odds of finding a marrow donor is highly unlikely. Countless lives may be saved as a result of healthy people giving of themselves to assist those that are not as healthy.
12/14/09 Jerome had a transplant two and half weeks a go. He is recovering well. Please keep Jerome in your prayers.

Krissy

Krissy Kobata is 26 and loves being with her friends and family. She was diagnosed with a blood disorder called Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS) that will eventually require a bone marrow transplant. MDS is a primary bone marrow condition, where her bone marrow does not produce normal blood cells. The condition is otherwise known as "preleukemia".

Typically MDS is diagnosed in 60+ year old men, Krissy is a vibrant 26 year old woman. Ethnicity is a key factor in finding a bone marrow "match" and Krissy's family is of mixed heritage - Japanese and Caucasian - which has made it more difficult for her to find a donor match. More diverse donors are needed!
Please follow her progress and offer your support to Krissy at: www.teamkrissy.com

Anne

Anne registered in May of 2001. Five years later she received a call from the donor center informing her that she was a match. She said, “ It was really nice to know that I could possibly be able to help someone who is trying to survive”. Anne said as a potential donor, she answered the health history questionnaire and gave some blood to test before the actual donation. She said, “I never had any hesitation. If I had, I would not have registered in the first place. I think it is only fair to the patient, once you make that commitment to go ahead with the process if you are called”.

When people ask her about her donation she says, “It doesn’t matter. It was never about me, it was about that person who needed my help”.

Anne’s patient is doing well. She hopes to meet him some day.
